CAMARILLO, Calif. (KABC) -- A grieving family is begging for answers after their 30-year-old son was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Ventura County.
"He had a lot of life ahead. He was really just beginning," said Steven Arthur Monzon, the father of the victim, Steven Michael Monzon.
Monzon was struck and killed the night of June 7 in Camarillo. It's a night his family is still processing.
"When I got home, he wasn't home. I called his phone a couple of times, it rang and no answer."
His son was on the way home from Moorpark in an Uber, and although he couldn't reach him, he assumed things were OK. Then, there was a life-shattering knock at the door around midnight.
"She said 'I have some serious news for you' so I stepped outside and asked her if it was bad news and she said yes."
Monzon had been struck by what witnesses say was a black sedan that left the scene. His parents say it happened after he was dropped off by the Uber halfway through his trip home, on Santa Rosa Road near Gerry Road.
"Dark, no street lights, no sidewalks and we have a lot of questions still about what happened... because why was he let off?"
As the California Highway Patrol investigates the deadly hit-and-run and works to understand why the Uber ride was cut short and identify the driver who struck Monzon, his family is holding out hope that someone comes forward.
"Ventura County, everybody knows each other and it's a very close knit community. We are hoping that some way or another someone is vigilant," said mother Maribel Torres Monzon.
The family says they've also been speaking with people who live near the crash site and asking them not to delete any doorbell camera video that could help investigators. Meantime, anyone with information can contact the California Highway Patrol.
