Chemical leak at La Habra neighborhood prompts shelter-in-place notice
LA HABRA, Calif. (KABC) -- Emergency crews are on scene of a reported chemical leak in a La Habra neighborhood as nearby residents are being asked to shelter in place.
The incident was reported at about 12 p.m. in the 500 block of South Cypress Street. Responding firefighters saw smoke showing from a one-story commercial building, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Video from the scene shows a yellow plume of smoke coming from the site.
L.A. County Fire Capt. Eddie Diaz said three people were checked out by medical personnel on scene but did not show signs of any injuries and did not complain of any discomfort.
La Habra Mayor José Medrano posted on Facebook that it appears the chemical leak has been contained but nearby residents are still being asked to shelter in place until further notice.
The fire department said all initial evacuation orders were downgraded to an advisory and authorities shortened the distance around the area under the advisory.
Cypress Street is closed between Lambert Rd. and La Habra Boulevard.
Captain Diaz said they are keeping everyone about 300 feet from the site of the incident.
The commercial building involved houses Shepard Bros., a manufacturing company that sells specialty chemicals for food storage. It was not immediately clear what caused the chemical leak incident.
