Loved ones mourning 22-year-old preschool teacher killed in Mount Baldy crash
MOUNT BALDY, Calif. (KABC) -- Heartbroken loved ones and community members are mourning a 22-year-old preschool teacher who was tragically killed in a crash in San Bernardino County.
Korrina Lopez was a young woman with a bright smile and a genuine kind soul, according to the family.
"I wish she was here right now but...," said her young brother, Elijah. "It was sad but I'm happy for her because she's not in pain anymore and that she's with God."
She was fatally injured in a July 17 crash just north of Shinn Road on Mount Baldy, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators believe a driver sped past a vehicle, lost control and veered into oncoming traffic. The CHP says the driver of the car Lopez was a passenger in was unable to avoid the crash and slammed into the driver.
Lopez died later at the hospital.
"I think the family is just looking for peace. And we may never find it," said her uncle, Gabriel Caraza.
Family, friends and stringers gathered Sunday at a growing memorial outside Solid Ground Church, where relatives say Lopez was preschool teacher.
Before her death, Lopez was the primary caregiver for her mother, who family members say was recently diagnosed with stage four brain cancer.
"Before she passed, I promised I would take care of my mom," said her brother, Isaiah Lopez. "I plan on keeping that promise."
A friend of the family set up a GoFundMe page to help the family get through this difficult time.
"There is no other person in my life that I knew that was just as angelic as her. I want people to know that anytime you drive, remember there are other people out there." said friend Samera Siddiqi.
"Our family will never be the same without her... but we're going to hold it together and stay strong for her," Caraza added.
The driver who caused the crash suffered minor injuries.
The CHP says the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the agency.
