New land movement reported in Rancho Palos Verdes

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (KABC) -- A 300- to 400-foot section of the bluffs has given way along the coast in Rancho Palos Verdes.

AIR7 captured video of the slide on Sunday afternoon.

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to Marguerite Drive on Saturday night. They say there are no evacuation orders and that no homes are threatened.

Eyewitness News even spotted some people lounging poolside on Sunday, despite the proximity to the yellow caution tape.

"There's no indication that we're going to have to red- or yellow-tag any of these structures. I do not see a need for any evacuations or need for people to not continue occupying the structure," city manager Ara Mihranian said.

The slide extends about 100 feet into yards, affecting at least three homes.

The new slide is about four miles away from the boundary of the ongoing Portuguese Bend landslide.

City officials say the recent land movement is not correlated to the larger, accelerated movement involving the Portuguese Bend landslide.

"This is a completely isolated land subsidence. We're not really calling it a landslide," Mihranian said. "The coastal bluff essentially dropped approximately 30 to 40 feet, and it's in a crescent shape, and that crescent shape is approximately about 300-feet wide."

City officials say geologists are investigating what caused the land movement.

"We are concerned. Residents are concerned. The neighborhood is concerned," Mihranian said. "We are looking into it, and we are working very closely with the property owners that have been affected by it."

The city is asking fisherman and others to stay clear of the shoreline in the area.
