Southern California snow lovers may want to head to the slopes early during this ski season, as forecasters predict that conditions could be significantly drier in the region after late January.
"I think the first part of the season looks pretty good," said Bill Wadell of AccuWeather. "We could have this kind of action all the way through the Thanksgiving, into the start of December. It's the second part of the season that I'm concerned about -- that it gets milder, it gets drier, and then we don't see as much activity in the Southern Sierras and east of L.A."
Mammoth Mountain was supposed to open for skiing and snowboarding last weekend but that was delayed. Now the ski resort is expected to open Thursday.

In Southern California, opening day at Snow Valley, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain is still to be determined. Mountain High said its opening day is "coming soon."
"I don't see a whole lot of atmospheric river events that take place from late January through February, and that means that things could change a little bit for the ski areas as far as fresh, natural snow goes," Wadell said. "But if we can set a good base here in the beginning, I think we're going to have minimal problems going through the ski season."
