Stabbing suspect shot by detective in Westlake District, LAPD says

WESTLAKE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect accused of stabbing a man was shot by a Los Angeles police detective in the Westlake District on Tuesday, according to the police department.

Police said it started when a plainclothes detective for LAPD saw a man pull out a knife and start stabbing another man around 11 a.m. in the area of Alvarado Street and Olympic Boulevard, about three blocks south of MacArthur Park.

LAPD says the detective intervened and ordered the suspect to drop the knife, but was forced to open fire.

"The suspect, described as a male, was struck by gunfire, and when additional units arrived, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to receive medical treatment. He is in stable condition," said Officer J. Chaves with LAPD. "The victim was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition and is being treated for an apparent stab wound."

Police said a knife was recovered at the scene and will be booked into evidence.

AIR7 video from above the scene shows numerous evidence markers near what appear to be bullet casings, right next to a city bus. Police said the Metro bus has cameras that may have captured what led up to the shooting. There were also reportedly several witnesses on board.

A witness captured video of the scene as detectives tried to track down any footage of the incident, including from a Waymo vehicle that was reportedly nearby.

"They escorted this Waymo back to the scene because it was behind the bus when the shooting happened. You already know they talking to Waymo to get all that footage," the witness said in Citizen App video.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. No one else was injured.
