Amanda Knox looks to reclaim her story in new Hulu series

NEW YORK CITY -- The name Amanda Knox may be known by many, but you've likely never heard her story from her perspective.

It's a story that you think you know after the countless headlines that dominated the news for years. But now, Knox is reclaiming her story by stepping back into the spotlight, this time as executive producer of a new scripted series on Hulu.

"I felt like I was suddenly in this very safe environment to explore and to grieve in ways that I hadn't before," Knox said.

The series is called "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox," starring Grace Van Patten, giving Knox a chance to tell her story, in her way, like never before.

"A lot of people have wanna ask me if it was traumatizing, and it wasn't, because for the first time, I'm not just reliving it alone," she said. "There's a whole village that came together to tell this story alongside me. And the fact that there were so many people in the room there with me working and caring to get it right was such a relief for me."

Amanda Knox walked the red carpet alongside her husband at the New York City premiere on Tuesday night.

In November of 2007, Knox was studying abroad in Italy when she was arrested and wrongfully convicted for the brutal murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. Knox's arrest immediately ignited a worldwide media circus, one that continued through the moment her conviction was overturned after spending four years in prison.

But as Knox watched her life play out in front of her from behind the camera lens, there was one moment that she felt extra pressure to get right: the interrogation scene.

"I really want people to know what it's like to be in the room and to be coerced and gaslit and scared into believing a false narrative," Knox said. "I was so relieved. I wept from relief that we got it right."

The story has all the makings of a true crime hit, but this Hulu series is unlike others out there. It's much more personal, and that was the point.

"I feel like her voice has been stolen from her so many times, and we want to remind people of the other human beings who populated this harrowing story."" said producer KJ Steinberg,

The cast and creators say they are so proud to tell this story in this way, with the help of Knox from behind the scenes.

"I'm so thankful that she was a part of it to to help guide me through it. I felt so honored to be a part of of something that was not where she came from her to reclaim herstory," Van Patten said.

Now alongside her proud and loving husband, Knox is turning the page on this next chapter of life, one she thought might never happen.

"We wouldn't be here if it weren't for Amanda inspiring all these people around her. All those hundreds of people who brought their best creative selves to make this thing happen chose to come on board with this project because of Amanda. And I think that's a testament to who you are," Knox's husband said.

And Knox is doing it for one of the most important people in her life: her daughter.

"I absolutely never thought as I was going through this that I would get to this point. There was a very long period of time there where I thought that the world had rejected me, and and I was gonna be alone forever. And I didn't know if I would be able to fall in love, and I didn't know if I would get to have children even when I wasn't in prison," Knox said.

"And so now to have a daughter and to feel a sense of urgency to sort of emerge from this dark cloud that has been hanging over me so that I don't inadvertently pass it on to her, that was extremely urgent the minute I realized that I was bringing a daughter to this world. And so I hope that this series helps make the world a little bit kinder to her than it was to me."

Hulu is owned by Disney, the same parent company as ABC Owned Television Stations.
