OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- Police are investigating after officers shot a man wielding a machete Monday afternoon in Oxnard.

Officers were called to the area of Saviers and Pleasant Valley roads around noon after receiving reports of a man waving a machete and causing a disturbance, according to police.

Police said officers made contact with the man, and he was shot by officers during the encounter.

"Officers verbally engaged the subject in an effort to gain his compliance," said the Oxnard Police Department in a statement released on Monday. "The officers then gave commands to the subject, and he did not comply."

The man was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center where he was last listed in critical but stable condition.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The department said it will share body camera footage at a later date.

"In accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation progresses," the department said.

Police said criminal charges for the suspect are pending.
