5 injured, 1 critically, in shooting at Virginia State University: officials

PETERSBURG, Va. -- A shooting at Virginia State University left five people injured, one critically, and prompted a campus lockdown early Saturday morning, school officials said.

The VSU Office of Communications and University said the shooting happened near the VSU Quad Annexes in the area of Boisseau Street. Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. local time to the 3300-block of Boisseau Street, where they found five people who had been shot outside of VSU residence halls.

All five people were transported to local hospitals, and according to Chesterfield County police, one of them is in critical condition, the university said. The four other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

VSU posted to social media just before 5 a.m. local time, saying the campus had been placed on lockdown following a shooting that involved "multiple suspects." The lockdown has since been lifted, and normal access to campus may resume, the university said.

What led up to the shooting was not immediately clear.

A significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation into the shooting continues. Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
