Shortly before 10 a.m., an LAPD spokesperson told ABC7 that a suspect was in custody in connection with the killing. Details of how and where he was apprehended were not available.
The names of the victim and suspect were not immediately released.
A Los Angeles Unified District spokesperson said students and staff from nearby Gridley-Montanez Dual Language Academy were temporarily relocated to Maclay Middle School due to the police activity.
"In an abundance of caution, the Los Angeles School Police Department will have an officer on campus providing direct support to our school community and will be providing directed patrol in the neighborhood," the LAUSD said in a statement after the suspect was taken into custody, adding that normal operations would resume at Gridley Elementary on Friday. "Our school also has mental health resources for students impacted by this incident."
"This shouldn't be happening. It sucks for the community," said a woman who gave her name only as Destiny, the mother of a Gridley Elementary student. "There were cops everywhere, walking around the whole complex. The ambulance came and it was just chaos."
