Ronald Reagan Presidential Library breaks ground on new Charters of Freedom Monument

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum celebrated President's Day Monday with live music, president reenactors, and a special groundbreaking.

The museum officially broke ground on its new Charters of Freedom Monument located near the Gold Star Memorial.

The outdoor monument will include engravings of the country's Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and a case on Civil Rights.

The Reagan library will be the first site in California to display the Charters with a final unveiling planned for this 4th of July.

"For people who can't go to Washington D.C., can't see the Charters of Freedom in person, can't see the Declaration of Independence, come out to the Reagan library and see a stone engraving of it, and really learn what the Founding Fathers of our country created when they created the United States of America," said Reagan library spokesperson Melissa Giller.

Foundation Forward, a nonprofit that installs life-size replicas of the Charters of Freedom, said it plans on creating more monuments across the country.

"Our goal is to place one of these settings in all 3,142 counties, boroughs and parishes in the entire United States, so that all citizens in America can have the opportunity to learn about these documents, and honor our military veterans, first responders and to just come together as a nation," said Foundation Forward's Michael Unruh.
