REDLANDS, Calif. (KABC) -- A Redlands restaurant owner from Nice, France said her son was at the scene of the deadly truck attack that killed at least 84 people and is grateful he is safe.

Sabine Belhacene Hecht was dishing up her French specialties on Friday, but she said her mind has been on the terror attack in the south of France as her son and daughter still live there.

She said Bastille Day is something her family celebrates every year, and this year was no different.

Thursday night, her son and other members of her family were out celebrating French Independence Day when a truck plowed through the crowd of revelers.

Hecht said she didn't know anything was wrong until her son called her and told her he was safe.

Her restaurant sits a block away from the apartment where the San Bernardino terrorist couple lived and plotted their attack on an office party.

Fourteen people lost their lives in December, including two of the health inspectors that inspected her restaurant.

"We can't be all the time scared about what they did," Hecht said. "We need to be strong to do something to these people. They can't continue like that."
