Carson friends open area's first Black pop culture store
These two friends from Carson co-founded Black Star Collectibles, a Black pop culture store selling mainly toys and collectibles.

CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- Store shelves are being restocked at Black Star Collectibles inside Carson's South Bay Pavilion Mall.

Although they've only been open for less than a month, owners Feon Cooper and Kareem Burton have been friends for years.

"You know it came with the idea, I was reading comic books and collecting toys and he pretty much told me, you know we're collecting all these toys and reading comics, we should open up a shop," said co-owner, Feon Cooper.

The duo says it's the area's first Black pop culture toy and collectible store.

"Customers of our skin color can walk in to a store and see a toy that represents them," added Cooper.

These longtime friends are feeling blessed that business as a new company amid the pandemic has been so good: "We never thought it would be this huge - the massive support we've been getting from the community has just been amazing."
