Gunman accused of firing at officers in Leimert Park arrested

LEIMERT PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A gunman accused of shooting one man and firing at responding Los Angeles Police Department officers was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with police Thursday morning.

The suspect was holed up for hours in the area along Third Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where officers fired what appeared to be several flash bangs during the standoff.

ABC7 reporter Marc Cota-Robles and his photographer were affected by that tear gas but not hurt.

The unidentified suspect was taken into custody around 5 a.m. and put into an ambulance. He appeared conscious and uninjured, despite the number of flash bangs.

"All people have different tolerance levels, and some people's tolerance for tear gas is very low and other people's tolerance level to tear gas is very high," explained Capt. Darnell Davenport of the LAPD.

It all started around 9 p.m. Wednesday, when police arrived to check out a man who'd been shot.

While LAPD officers were on scene responding to the gunshot victim, they reported hearing additional gunfire in the area. They took cover and asked for assistance.

No additional injuries were immediately reported, but the windows of an LAPD vehicle were shot out. Despite being fired at, the officers did not return fire.

Aerial footage showed four officers carrying the wounded man, who was shot in the leg, to safety.

Paramedics were on scene treating the injured victim and then transporting him by ambulance to a local hospital.

People who live along the street where the shooting occurred said the suspect was a man in a wheelchair, described as being "crazy."
