Artist shows off 20-years of work in 'Electric Earth' exhibit at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Visitors at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA will enter artist Doug Aitken's world of moving images, dizzying effects and surreal sculptures in the museum's latest exhibit.

Aitken works in moving images with video screens inside and outside of a circle in one piece. It can be a little dizzying, and guests are invited to sit down and take it all in.

His sculptures are everywhere, filling the museum. It's a 20-year survey of his work, which is a first in North America.

Aitken is a Los Angeles artist who has a studio in Venice.

"So many of these works have never been shown in America before. I'm so grateful to have them here as one constellation in the city," he said.

His exhibit is called "Electric Earth," which is a commentary on the environment and urban life.

An excavation is part of the exhibit, called Sonic Foundation, which plays out music created by water dripping from pipes high above.

Another large video installation is called Migration Empire, which features animals wandering in and out of motel rooms. Aitken, who grew up going to the Geffen, said having free reign at the place is thrilling.

"In a lot of ways I see this exhibition as kind of letting go, just kind of giving back," he said.

The exhibit will be around until January, and it's one that is so big, visitors may need to come twice to see it all.
