Anderson .Paak is a Grammy-winning singer, rapper, songwriter, drummer and producer. He's just added feature film director to his resume with the new movie, "K-Pops!"
.Paak also co-wrote the screenplay and stars in the film with this real-life son.
In "K-Pops!" .Paak plays a musician hoping stardom is in his future. He finds a job as part of the house band for a K-pop competition show in Seoul, South Korea. While there, he discovers one of the kids competing is his long lost son, played by his own son, Soul Rasheed.
"My son inspired me. He wanted to be a YouTuber, and we were in quarantine. I had no more shows. Everything was shut down and I was in the house with him," .Paak said. "When we started making these YouTube videos, it brought me back to when I was a kid and wanting to do, like, all kinds of home videos with my sisters. And we'd just do, like, silly skits and bits and that's what me and my son started doing."
.Paak says when he saw how talented his kid was, he got the idea for the movie, knowing it would also teach Soul about his heritage. Soul is African-American and Korean, just like his dad.
"I was always, you know, pushing for my son to know about both cultures. You know, I thought that was important. I knew he knew a lot about BTS but I was always, like, 'Do you know about BET?'" .Paak said.
As for making the film together, .Paak said: "Getting to spend that much time with my son, I wanted to do something that we could create a bond with and I was getting to know more about his interests and I was having fun doing it."
"K-Pops!" is in theaters and is rated PG-13.
