Hu's Szechwan Restaurant keeps family recipes alive in LA
Family-style dining and generous portions have made Hu's Szechwan Restaurant a staple of the Palms community since the '70s.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Perched on the edge of Los Angeles' Palms community, Hu's Szechwan Restaurant has been serving authentic Chinese cuisine and bringing families together for nearly five decades.

Kevin Hu says his parents opened the restaurant with a simple goal.

"My parents opened Hu's in 1977 in hopes of bringing some good Chinese food to the Westside," he said.

Today, the neighborhood favorite is known for its family-style dining and generous portions of Kung Pao beef, Szechwan shrimp, pork dumplings, crispy orange chicken, sauteed green beans and tofu.

"Sichuan is province of China, and they're more known for their spiciness and garlic flavors," Hu said.

Many of the recipes served today have been passed down from Kevin's parents, who immigrated from China and Taiwan.

"We've always been a family style-oriented restaurant," Hu said. "We serve all our dishes family style, and it's just a great place for family and friends to meet and gather."

Hu's is also part of ABC7 history.

The restaurant was featured on the station's popular "Dining With Dills" segment in the 1980s, helping introduce the longtime local favorite to even more Southern Californians.

Unfortunately, this October, Hu's Szechwan Restaurant will close its current location as it searches for a new home on the Westside. Kevin says he hopes to keep the restaurant going for many more decades.

"I'd just like to thank all of our loyal customers after all these years," Hu said.

Hu's Szechwan Restaurant is located at 10450 National Blvd, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, closed on Mondays.

If you'd like to support Hu's as it searches for a new location, the restaurant has launched a GoFundMe.
