POMONA, Calif. (KABC) -- For everything from tacos and burritos to chicharrón, make your way to Borreguitas in Pomona.
Borreguitas translates to "little sheep" in English, but don't let the name fool you. The restaurant's Mexican-inspired menu is entirely vegan.
"I think everybody has that right to have good, delicious food that's healthy and affordable," head chef Alejandra Torres Mora said.
Owner Rosa and her three daughters or "borreguitas," as she calls them, opened the restaurant eight years ago with a goal of bringing healthy and accessible food to their community.
The family says that where they lived in Mexico, meat was often considered a luxury, and meals consisted mostly of potatoes, rice and beans.
At Borreguitas, you'll find everything from vegetable burritos to taco trios made with proteins like jackfruit and house-made soy.
"The food is delicious," Torres Mora said. "You're going to find something that you enjoy."
Located just blocks from Cal Poly Pomona, Borreguitas offers daily specials and works to keep prices low for students and community members. Most breakfast and lunch entrees cost $11 or less.
The family says the city of Pomona has been essential to the foundation of their restaurant.
And their food isn't the only thing keeping customers coming back. Borreguitas' coffee has become such a hit that the family is expanding.
This fall, Borreguitas plans to open a cafe next door, where customers can enjoy favorites like its 24-hour cold brew, made in house.
"I think there's nothing better than when people actually enjoy your food and they want other people to come and experience what they get here," Torres Mora said.
Borreguitas opens at 8 a.m. every day and is located at 987 S Garey Ave., in Pomona.
