1st supermoon of 2018 lights up Southern California sky

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The first supermoon of 2018 lit up the night sky across Southern California Monday night.

ABC7 caught some images of it as it peered through the clouds.

A supermoon is very special because it takes place during the moon's closest approach to earth, making it appear larger than an average moon.

Supermoons will be visible on January 1 and 31 in 2018.

NASA called it a "Wolf Moon" and said it was the most super of the three supermoons that will happen this winter.

They also called it the "biggest and brightest" for 2018.

If you missed it, the next supermoon will be at end of the month on Jan. 31.
