LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- TurboRoo, a Chihuahua puppy who was born without front legs, is impressing pet lovers with his determination.

A pet store in Long Beach hosted an event Sunday so that customers could meet TurboRoo and learn about his story.

Some vets had suggested putting the Chihuahua to sleep, but Ashley Looper, a worker at another vet clinic, said she would adopt him.

Looper and her boyfriend fashioned tiny wheeled scooters for TurboRoo to get around. The images went viral, and TurboRoo drew the attention of an engineer, who built him an even better scooter.

"The big thing that we want everyone to take away from Turbo's story is that you never give up, even despite little tiny things or even big things in your life. You can always overcome them," said Looper.

The plight of pets like TurboRoo is leading to breakthroughs in prosthetics for animals.
