VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A local college student who pulled an all-nighter for a test fell asleep while driving and crashed into a utility pole and fire hydrant in Van Nuys Thursday morning.
The crash created a massive geyser on the 5900 block of Hillview Park Avenue near Oxnard Street. Authorities said the driver was not seriously injured.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power responded to the scene to clean up the big mess. It took crews more than an hour to turn the water off because of electrocution concerns.
"Because he hit a fire hydrant and a pole, and the lines came down with it, we were really concerned that we'd have some electrification issues. So we were taking extra precaution for that," LAPD Officer John Stafford said.
The LADWP said it will calculate the amount of water that was lost and bill the driver who hit the hydrant.
