VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect was shot and injured after opening fire on deputies during a traffic stop in Victorville Tuesday night, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies pulled over a driver of a Jeep for expired registration around 10:30 p.m. on the 14000 block of Navarro Drive. The front passenger in the vehicle jumped out and opened fire, according to authorities.

Two deputies returned fire, but the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Strader Surratt of Victorville, was able to run off into the desert behind homes. About 10 minutes later, he was spotted about 1,000 yards away hiding in a bush. When deputies approached, they said Surratt began shooting at them. Several deputies returned fire and struck Surratt multiple times.

Two deputies suffered minor injuries. The sheriff's department did not elaborate on the injuries but said they were not gunshot wounds.

Surratt was airlifted to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive.

Surratt's gun was recovered at the scene. Two other people in the Jeep -- a man and a woman -- were interviewed and released.

The six deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
