WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Fresh snow and sunny skies made for an ideal ski day Saturday in the local mountains, drawing heavy traffic and long lines as thousands headed to Wrightwood after this week's storm.
Families bundled up to enjoy the winter weekend, including longtime resident Chris Skinner, who said fresh snow is exactly what visitors hope for.
"People come to the mountains because they want snow. It's a big family event, and the community likes it, because that's why we're here," he said.
Wrightwood has faced challenges this season, including a slow start to the ski season and flash flooding over the Christmas holiday that damaged parts of town.
"Well, it feels like normalcy again. We usually get snow in December, January. We've been pretty dry in that regard. We got a whole bunch of rain, flooded us out, and no snow and no fun," Skinner said.
The most recent storm delivered 18 inches of snow, bringing an influx of visitors eager to enjoy fresh powder. For locals, the crowds are a mixed blessing.
"For the businesses, alright. For us driving, we've got to watch out for everyone, be safe. The gas pumps, they run out of gas sometimes," said Jacob Stanfield of Wrightwood.
Heavy traffic stretched for miles on Saturday as drivers waited to reach Mountain High Resort. Still, many said the long lines were worth it for a day on the slopes.
Mountain High's lifts are scheduled to open at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Those planning to visit the resort this weekend are advised to arrive early and prepare for significant traffic.
