Celebrating Earth Month and National Geographic's newest series, "Secrets of the Bees" from Executive Producer James Cameron, Disney is inviting audiences to step into wonder, "highlighting stories that spark curiosity and celebrate the wonders of the natural world," says entomologist and National Geographic explorer Dr. Sammy.
Dr. Sammy began his journey at the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival with Chef Natalie Willingham, Chef de Cuisine of Food Sustainability at Disneyland Resort.
Highlighting the Resort's "plant-forward" menu items, like the Chile Relleno Torta, Chef Natalie underscored the commitment to reducing the carbon intensity of the items served at Disneyland Resort.
"As somebody who is constantly talking about the importance of keeping bees healthy," Dr. Sammy explained, "everything we can do to keep the climate from warming additionally is something we can do to keep the bees healthy."
Checking in with Lindsey Allen from the Environmental Sustainability team next, Dr. Sammy got to explore the resort's Zero Waste Art Challenge. Every year, Disneyland Cast Members are encouraged to look at what might be considered waste in their areas, and to upcycle that waste into an art project.
"We heard you were coming to talk about bees," Allen told Dr. Sammy, "so the theme for this year was 'Bears, Bees and a bit of Magic.'"
Dr. Sammy was in his element at the Beneficial Garden Insects Show & Tell, where Horticulture & Resort Enhancement Cast Members taught him how Disneyland Resort utilizes insects like the Praying Mantis, to reduce the use of chemicals when caring for the Resort's beautiful gardens.
"I love the biological control systems that you guys are utilizing here because this way, you can add a lot less chemicals to the environment and in that way you can better protect the bee populations and the rest of the pollinators that don't want to be poisoned by these chemicals," explained Dr. Sammy.
The Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival ends April 27, 2026.
National Geographic's Secrets of the Bees is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
