Heavy rain causes Huntington Beach apartment ceiling to collapse

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The weight of the water from massive downpours caused a ceiling to collapse at a Huntington Beach apartment complex.

More than 30 units sustained damage at buildings four and five at the Casa Del Sol Apartments.

Eleanor Dematteo's apartment was one of the damaged units.

"A lot of ceilings down. Started on the third floor, second floor, now it's going to the first floor," Dematteo said.

The roof of the complex was exposed because solar panels were being installed.

"The contractor did indeed tarp the roof but apparently not adequately to where they had a lot of water intrusion during the rain," described Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez with the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

Dematteo's place is now red-tagged along with more than 30 others. This means she can't stay in her apartment. The power has also been shut off.

"Everyone is trying to put plastic over it, like layers of plastic to cover it. Right now, we're trying to get food to another freezer. We have no power," Dematteo said.

Heavy rain caused problems across Orange County, from street flooding to postponing the Angels home game - for the first time in 20 years. The Angels game was rescheduled for Monday at 2 p.m.

At the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, a lot of cleanup is needed. Concert goers were forced to walk through knee-high water to get to their seats for a Third Eye Blind and Dashboard Confessional concert that was later canceled.

According to the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater's website, Monday night's 5 Seconds of Summer concert is slated to move forward as scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
