Scorching temperatures across Southern California prompt extreme heat warning

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Southern California is experiencing scorching temperatures as high pressure builds over the region this week.

An Extreme Heat Warning for much of the region begins Tuesday at 10 a.m., with triple-digit, near record-breaking heat in the forecast for many areas. The warning expires at 8 p.m. on Friday.

A Red Flag Warning will begin Tuesday for the foothill and mountain communities due to the intense heat and wind.

The heat wave is expected to peak on Thursday, but no significant relief is expected until the end of the weekend, when a strong onshore flow begins.

Cooler air will start coming in on Sunday, dropping temperatures down near where they should be for this time of year.

Los Angeles and Orange counties on Tuesday will see near-record heat, with a high of 99 degrees and a low of 70. Temperatures are expected to peak at 100 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday,

The valleys and Inland Empire can expect a high of 105 degrees and a low of 70 on Tuesday. Triple-digit heat is in the forecast until the end of the weekend, with a peak of 105 degrees Tuesday through Thursday.

Beach communities will be sunny on Tuesday with a high of 80 degrees and a low of 68.

Mountain communities on Tuesday will see a 20% chance of thunderstorms, with a high of 81 degrees and a low of 49.

Desert areas on Tuesday can expect a 10% chance of thunderstorms, with a high of 106 degrees and a low of 74. Palm Springs is expected to reach 112 degrees.
