The autumnal equinox has arrived

Say goodbye to summer because the autumnal equinox arrived on September 22, marking the beginning of fall in the northern hemisphere.

"Equinox is latin for 'equal night,'" according to AccuWeather. "What happens during this time is that the sun is directly above the earth's equator, creating an almost equal night and day."

It is only during the equinox that the axis of the earth is not tilted towards or away from the sun. Only when the axis tilts after the equinox do we see shorter or longer days, and shorter or longer nights.
