Burglars target Westwood residents' mailboxes, cars
WESTWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Burglars are on the prowl in Westwood, and they're targeting everything from residents' mailboxes to vehicles.
Getting caught on surveillance video doesn't seem to deter the burglars. The camera caught clear images of both suspects - a man and a woman.
Once inside the lobby of a residential complex in the 1400 block of Camden Avenue, the woman is seen going to the parking garage. The man uses a master key to open the mailboxes and steals the residents' mail. But he doesn't stop there. He goes into the parking garage and finds an unlocked Lexus.
"They took the diaper bag, I should have noticed, they took the car seat base, they took everything in the glove compartment, medicine, makeup, my bags," said the Lexus owner, who only wanted to be identified as Tiffani.
Tiffani came home three minutes before the suspects targeted her building. From her unit, she tried to use the Lexus app to remotely lock her SUV but it wouldn't work.
"Maybe it's a WiFi thing, maybe it's just taking a little longer, no big deal. I put it down for a second, finished unloading all my groceries, tried it again, and I realize, 'OK, this is strange, it's still not working. So OK, no big deal,'" she said.
The app wouldn't lock her SUV, because the suspect was inside stealing her stuff.
Other residents believe the suspects got away with their tax refund check, and other important items that arrived in the mail. Tiffani hopes the suspects are caught before they rob others in the neighborhood.
"Do you think what you're doing is really worth it? So you know, beside the material things, you're ruining everybody's lives this way," Tiffani said.
Police say there have been more than two dozen car break-ins in Westwood so far this year. Residents on Camden Avenue hope someone will recognize the suspects and turn them in.
