Crossing guard risks life to save kids

June 11, 2008 6:32:39 AM PDT
A crossing guard just a day away from retirement risked his life to save kids in danger.Anthony Timko, 65, from Cleveland, Ohio, jumped in front of a truck and shoved several kids out of the way before getting hit by the truck himself.

The kids are fine, and Timko is recovering in the hospital from some bumps and bruises.

The 11-year-veteran crossing guard doesn't remember much about his heroic action.

"All I remember was there was some kids, it was raining real hard and it was flooded, and they couldn't cross the street. The light was changing, and all I remember was running out to stop the traffic," Timko said.

Today was supposed to be the day Timko retired from being a crossing guard, and now he says he's going out with a bang.
