Heavy babies prone to arthritis later

June 30, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
while many parents love to brag about their big babies, a new study suggests a link between how much a person weighed at birth to the risk for rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study.

The likelihood of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis was doubled in women born weighing more than 10 pounds, compared with those born weighing 7 to 8.5 pounds.

Authors suggest fetal nutrition plays an important role and it's a risk factor mother's can modify.

The findings are in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
