Slain L.A. deputy laid to rest

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES He was laid to rest Saturday at a funeral mass at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral.

The 27-year-old was gunned down last Saturday outside his parent's home in Cypress Park, where he had been living with his family.

Escalante worked at the men's central jail.

Investigators are trying to determine if he was the victim of a "hit" arranged by gang members held there.

During the service, Deputy Escalante was lauded for his bravery. Escalante leaves behind a wife and 3 young children.

They were about to buy a home in Pomona when he was killed.
