Depression drug may treat chronic pain

Eli Lilly and Co. said its drug Cymbalta, which is commonly used to treat depression, may also reduce chronic lower back pain.

In the study, released in a meeting of neurologists in Spain, 236 patients were given Cymbalta. In the first week of use, 31 percent of patients reported a 50 percent reduction in pain.

Eli Lilly has filed an application with the FDA to allow the drug to be prescribed for managing chronic pain.
