Jury selection begins in ex-sheriff case

SANTA ANA, Calif. The U.S. Attorney's office has accused Carona of using his elected office to take bribes in exchange for favors. His wife and alleged mistress were also indicted.

There had been early speculation in law enforcement circles that a plea bargain would happen before a trial, but no deal was made, and the trial is expected to begin at the end of this month.
