Henry Sanchez, 51, and Penny Avila, 48, left Long Beach for Catalina late Wednesday night.
Sanchez is the brother of California Congresswomen Loretta and Linda Sanchez.
The Coast Guard is looking into a possible collision with a barge.
The debris was brought ashore, but there's no sign of the couple, or their 26 foot boat.
