Driver flees after hitting 7-year-old

SOUTH LOS ANGELES The 7-year-old victim is expected to survive his injuries, although he is still in critical condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He fractured his foot, broke several ribs and was bleeding from his brain, but his health is improving, officials said.

Officers said the boy ran into the street to chase a ball when he was hit and run over by a gray minivan at about 6 p.m. in front of the boy's home on the 6900 block of Estrella Avenue in South L.A. The boy was able to grab the ball and was about the cross the street again when he was hit.

Detectives say the female driver, described as being 35 to 40 years of age, stopped and got out of her vehicle, but eventually got back in her car and drove away.

One witness said she confronted the driver before she drove away.

"After she hit the little boy, I yelled at her, she got out from her car. She came out, she looked at me, she goes 'Ay dios mio, dios mio' and then goes, she was shaking and doing all this stuff, and told her, 'look what you did, look what you did,'" said witness Elizabeth Vera.

Anyone with information is urged to call the 24 hour, toll-free number (877) LAPD-24-7.

"Please call in because any little lead might lead to something big where we could help identify the suspect," said LAPD Sgt. Ruby Malachi.
