State offices to close two days a month

SACRAMENTO The Schwarzenegger administration says all state government buildings will close the first and third Fridays of each month beginning on Feb. 6.

Exceptions will be made for prison, hospitals, parks and some other agencies.

The governor signed an order last month mandating unpaid furloughs for state workers in order to help close a $42-billion budget gap. The office closures are a way of enacting those furloughs, which are expected to save the state more than $1 billion.

State employee unions have sued to block the furloughs.
