Mayor Villaraigosa launches 2009 campaign

LOS ANGELES The mayor was surrounded by other elected city officials and hundreds of supporters, when he made the announcement during a speech at his campaign headquarters in Boyle Heights, the area where he grew up.

Mayor Villaraigosa said there have been great improvements in the city of Los Angeles over the course of his term, in areas like education, crime and clean energy.

Mayor Villaraigosa has raised $2.7-million for his campaign through December 31, far more than any of his opponents.

The mayor faces nine little-known challengers in the primary election on March 3.

All the challengers participated in a forum for mayoral candidates at Holman Methodist church in south Los Angeles Saturday.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was a no show.

The event was sponsored by the national association for equal justice in America.
