Feds to review case against Perata

March 5, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Federal authorities in Sacramento say they're considering whether to prosecute former State Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata on political corruption charges. The FBI has been researching Perata's activities for years over allegations that the lawmaker's political influence may have been bought with funds diverted through consulting firms that employed Perata's relatives.

Federal prosecutors in San Francisco recently announced they would not prosecute based on the information they'd received, but the FBI has convinced prosecutors in Sacramento to review its findings. Attorneys hired to defend Perata, an Oakland Democrat, accuse the FBI of continuing a groundless inquiry and claim the decision to continue the investigation is politically motivated.

A Sacramento-based prosecutor who was appointed by President Bush denies that charge.
