Man killed in home-invasion robbery

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. Police responded to the /*Regency Gardens Apartments*/ on the 5100 block of Woodman Avenue, near Magnolia Boulevard, about 6 p.m., Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section said.

"The call did come out that the suspects were possibly impersonating an officer," LAPD Capt. Kelly Mulldorfer told reporters at the scene.

"I don't have information to substantiate that. But since the call came out that way, that's certainly an angle we're going to be looking at."

Upon arrival, officers found a man who was declared dead from an apparent gunshot wound, Lee said. The victim was found inside a third-floor unit, according to broadcast reports.

"It appears as though they made entry into this apartment -- forcible entry into the apartment. There was some sort of struggle, and one of the victims was shot," Mulldorfer said at the scene.

It was unclear how many others were in the apartment when the assailants forced their way inside.

The deceased victim's name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

According to a preliminary investigation, police were looking for two men seen running out of the apartment complex following the shooting, Lee said.

Residents said the victim was in his mid-20s and worked as a DJ.

"The guy was a really nice guy, you know he says "Hi," "Bye," and all those things," a man who lived in the complex told the station.

Anyone with information on the killing was asked to call detectives at the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys station at (818) 374-9500.
