All teens may be screened for depression

March 30, 2009 8:20:57 AM PDT
A government-appointed medical panel is urging doctors to routinely screen all teenagers for depression. The recommendation goes further than the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The U.S. Preventive Services task force says that nearly 2 million teens suffer from depression.

Evidence shows that simple questionnaires can accurately diagnose depression in settings like a pediatrician's office. The group even recommends testing kids who do not show any symptoms.

The recommendations are in next month's issue of the journal Pediatrics.
