Teachers are asking the LAUSD to consider furloughs instead of layoffs.
In the past, the teachers union has resisted furloughs or unpaid days off.
In a news release, LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said, "My goal is to save as many jobs as possible, while being financially responsible during this economic crisis."
