UGGs may provide little support for feet

The boot with the twin-faced skeepskin has been a footwear craze for years. Even during these tight economic times, /*UGG Australia*/ says sales are up.

UGG Australia says the Classic Tall boot has a taller upper for supreme comfort, but foot specialists are telling UGG lovers they may lack support.

"It may feel cushiony, it may feel comfortable, but it doesn't mean they're getting the necessary arch support that a foot needs to function effectively," said Dr. Rock Positano from Hospital for Special Surgery.

Positano says /*arch support*/ is important for helping the foot absorb shock. Lack of support means overuse of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones in the book and ankle.

A recent study showed a correlation between a flat arch and problems with the knee, the hip and the back.

Positano says the best support comes from a semi-rigid shoe, that's not too flexible, with a small heel.

But if you can't give up your UGGs, Positano suggests getting a foot bed insert to add arch support to the boots.

"We try to tell our patients that UGGs are okay to wear in a social situation. But to go out for a long walk or a hike or recreational activities, it's not a good idea," said Positano.
