B-1 bomber takes off from Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. People living beneath or near the flight path probably heard a lot of noise, and perhaps some rumbling. The enormous jet took off from the /*Long Beach Airport*/ in the afternoon.

The jet used its afterburners on takeoff, making it louder than the typical airport departure.

The B-1 was at the airport since July having some maintenance repairs done.

The /*B-1 bomber*/ is a supersonic-capable, swept-wing jet bomber. Sixty-seven B-1 bombers are still in use by the /*U.S. Air Force*/. The Air Force has described the B-1 as the "backbone of America's long-range bomber force."
