Memorial vigil for man shot by deputy

ATHENS, Calif. /*Darrick Collins*/, 36, was shot to death on Monday after authorities say he was mistaken for a robbery suspect.

Authorities say two deputies confronted Collins and his friend matching the descriptions of the robbery suspects, and Collins took off running. One of the deputies then shot him when he allegedly reached for his waistband.

Collins, a 36-year-old father of two, was hit at least once. He was transported to /*Harbor-UCLA Medical Center*/, where he was pronounced dead.

Collins was unarmed, but Sheriff Lee Baca says he did have drugs in his possession.

There were two community meetings held Thursday in connection with the incident.

Sheriff Baca wants an internal investigation of the shooting completed in 90 days.

This is the third fatal deputy-involved shooting in the past six weeks.
