Oscar buzz: Mulligan in 'An Education'

LOS ANGELES Actress /*Carey Mulligan*/ and the film, "An Education" has been a film festival favorite. Now this critical darling finally comes to the big screen for all of us to see.

This coming of age film, set in England in the early 1960s, has been a part of Mulligan's life for the better part of two years. She auditioned a number of times and then finally struck gold.

"I got the job and then it was six months before shooting," said Mulligan. "Now it was just another 18 months, so it been in my life for a really long time."

Things started moving quickly after the film won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

/*Peter Sarsgaard*/ co-stars as a charming older man who becomes entranced by this young woman. This new suitor introduces her to a brand new world of music, art, friends, and travel and that has her questioning her plans for college.

Mulligan knows roles like this character of Jenny are rare and she's happy to see where "Education" leads her.

"What was brilliant in Jenny is she is a three dimensional female lead, a real journey. I look for interesting parts and not playing same person twice," said Mulligan. "I want to find something different. Whether it's a big film or a small film or a play I'll try to nab it for myself."

"An Education" is rated PG-13. It'll be in theatres Friday.
