Valley standoff causes evacs, ends peacefully

VAN NUYS, Calif. The owner, who wasn't home at the time, told police that no one, except his cat, had any business inside his house. He also told police that he kept a collection of firearms at home.

That's when authorities shut down the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Kester Street and surrounding streets and evacuated several homes. Nearly 30 residents were taken to the gymnasium of Van Nuys High School, which is closed this week because of the holidays.

When officers approached the house, they found the door pried open and could hear noises inside. Police made contact with the suspect, but he refused to come out. That's when a five hour standoff started.

S.W.A.T. officers eventually went in. The suspect surrendered peacefully around 8:30 a.m. Police remained at the scene following the arrest to make sure the suspect had no accomplices.
