Kids hurt in L.A. hit-and-run [Graphic footage]

LOS ANGELES Police said the driver struck 14-year-old Flor Portillo and her 3-year-old niece as they crossed Main Street near 43rd Street at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 28.

The driver, described only as a woman, did not stop to help the girls, who were thrown about 40 feet. Both victims were seriously hurt and were rushed to the hospital. Both girls survived the accident.

"I don't remember seeing the car coming to me until it was right next to me, and then I don't remember when I got hit or anything," Portillo said. "I just remember, I was laying down on the floor, and people were telling me that everything was going to be OK, to stay awake, and then I knocked out."

Maribel Rodarte, mother of the 3-year-old victim, said she was amazed her daughter was able to survive.

"The detective in charge of the case said it's a miracle either one of them are alive, especially her, being so little," she said.

The suspect's car is described as an older two-door, white sedan with a stop lamp in the middle of the back window. It may also have collision damage to the right front headlamp or light cover.

Detectives are hoping the video will help witnesses come forward. Anyone with information is urged to call (877) LAPD-24-7 or Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
