Sunset strip gets first facelift in 75 years

LOS ANGELES Construction was set to get underway with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.

During the six-month, $5.4 million Sunset Strip project, the roadway itself will be resurfaced with rubberized asphalt, the sidewalk will be repaired, and landscaping will be installed to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

The project will cover a 1.6 mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard from Harper Avenue to Cory Avenue.

"It is important to us to make this kind of investment to improve an area of our city that is iconic," said West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land. "This project will bring even more energy and excitement to the legendary Sunset Strip."

This is the first time the Strip has been repaved since it was converted from a dirt road to a paved street in the late 1930's.
