Sex of fetus may be determined earlier

LOS ANGELES Researchers in the Netherlands have come up with a blood test that can be done early in a mother's pregnancy.

It's highly accurate at determining the sex of a fetus.

It works by detecting whether or not there are male-only Y chromosomes in the mother's blood.

Doctors say knowing the sex of a fetus early on allows them to better treat possible problems with the pregnancy.

There's no word yet on when the test might be available to the general public.
