Bullock enjoying moment in Oscar spotlight

Hollywood Wrap with George Pennacchio
LOS ANGELES Eyewitness News first talked with the actress some 16 years ago for the movie that made her a star: "Speed." Now, more than two dozen films later, she hit the jackpot with "The Blind Side," a real-life story of an affluent white family who open their hearts and their home to a homeless black youth.

Bullock's work in "The Blind Side" has gotten her noticed like never before. She won a Critics' Choice Movie award, tying with Meryl Streep. Two nights later, she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama, while Streep won for comedy. And we'll soon see if Bullock also goes home with an Academy Award.

All these accolades have been almost overwhelming.

"It's so many things that I don't have the capability to describe. It's not that I never thought it would happen. I just didn't think it was in this lifetime," said Bullock. "So I didn't plan for it, I didn't expect it, I didn't watch for it. I was happy and satisfied in my little position in the industry and I'm really happy in this position, too."

The 45-year-old actress says she was happy before any of this happened. And now, her husband Jesse James, who built the West Coast Choppers empire, is also along for the ride, carefully watching over his wife on the red carpet.

"He's making sure the package is well taken care of because I'm carrying some very important stuff. He's actually been hired by the jewelry and dress manufacturers that I'm wearing to do security as well. So it's kind of nice, he's a two-in-one package: husband-security," said Bullock.

Her streak of success also included last year's romantic comedy "The Proposal." And while "The Blind Side" may change where her career is heading next, fame and wealth have not changed the woman friends call Sandy.

"Oh well, after the Oscars it's all going to change because once you're on the red carpet in the gown, you're different somehow," Bullock joked. "You know, we're all lucky. You're lucky, I'm lucky. I know how lucky we are. But we also work hard so as long as we know the combination needs to be in balance, hopefully, we can stick around for another 10 years and call it a day."

Bullock and the other nominees are just waiting for the big day. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will take place Sunday, March 7. Watch ABC7 for the awards show and all of the red carpet and backstage action.
